Michael Kirkman allowed four second-inning runs, and that's when his outing came to an end. He gave up four runs on five hits, walking four and striking out two.

The bullpen was outstanding in relief of him.

Pedro Strop tossed 2.2 hitless innings, walking three and fanning four.

Thomas Diamond also walked three in 1.1 frames, but he gave up just one hit and fanned two.

Right-hander Beau Vaughan struck out five in three hitless innings. He walked one.

Left fielder Tim Smith was 4-for-5 with a double.

Second baseman Marcus Lemon singled twice in four at-bats.

Clark Murphy (1/4, 2B), Zach Zaneski (2/5, 2B) and Denny Duron (1/4, 2B) all doubled.

Leadoff man Cody Podraza singled twice in five at-bats.

Reinier Bermudez fanned two in a hitless inning. He walked one.

Richard Alvarez had a rough professional debut, allowing three runs in three innings of work.

Johan Yan's debut as a pitcher was rough as well. He coughed up five run son four walks and three hits in 1.2 innings. The bright side is that he struck out three.

Catcher Tomas Telis was 2-for-4 with a double, the team's only extra-base hit.

Justin Smoak singled once and walked once in four plate appearances.

Centerfielder Miguel Velazquez was 0-for-1 with three walks.
