On Wednesday, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced that they have optioned left-handed pitcher Jon Coutlangus and right-handed pitcher Esmerling Vasquez to Triple-A Reno and reassigned right-handed pitcher Seth Etherton to minor league camp. In addition, the club announced that right-handed pitcher Jailen Peguero was served with the notice of his impending release on Friday, March 20.
Peguero, 28, was designated for assignment in February to make room for newly-signed reliever Bobby Korecky on the 40-man roster. No team claimed Peguero, and he returned to major league camp. There, Peguero allowed 11 hits and nine runs (seven earned) in just five innings of work. He also allowed two home runs and blew a save opportunity.
Peguero had always fared well in the minors while struggling in the majors, leading many to consider him a Quadruple-A pitcher. In two major league seasons, Peguero walked 17 batters while fanning only 14 and posting a 7.50 ERA. He fanned 509 minor league batters while walking just 243, which led to a 3.22 minor league ERA.
The D-backs now have 41 players in camp. The breakdown includes 17 pitchers (17 roster/0 non-roster), five catchers (three roster/two non-roster), nine infielders (seven roster/two non-roster), and 10 outfielders (five roster/five non-roster).
