Minor League Roundup - 4/22

Emerson Frostad hit his third home run on Sunday

Though Eric Hurley had his first rocky outing at the Double-A level, the Frisco offense was able to pound out 11 runs on 17 hits on Sunday afternoon. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's minor league action.

W – Koronka (1-2)

Oklahoma starter John Koronka (6.55 ERA/.291 BAA) turned in his first quality start of the young season on Sunday afternoon.

Koronka, who started 23 games for the Rangers last season, yielded just two runs on four hits over seven innings. The lefty walked three and struck out four.

Leadoff man Freddy Guzman (.250/.403/.339) fell just a home run short of the cycle, as he was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, and two walks. Guzman also stole his fifth base of the season.

Second baseman Ramon Vazquez (1/3, BB) drove in two while left fielder Victor Diaz (2/4) had four runs batted in.

Former Express hurler Ezequiel Astacio (0.00 ERA/.133 BAA) closed out the win by allowing one hit in two scoreless frames.

AA: Frisco 11 – Corpus Christi – 14
L – Williams (1-1)
HR – Richardson (4), Frostad (3)

In his tenth Double-A appearance, Eric Hurley finally struggled in a start.

The Rangers' top prospect allowed nine runs – just three earned – on ten hits in 4 2/3 innings on Sunday. Hurley, who did not get a groundball out in the game, walked two and struck out two.

Though Hurley was without his best stuff for the entire game, he had only allowed one run through the game's first four innings. But things fell apart in the fifth, as he yielded eight runs while recording just two outs. Hurley was certainly not helped by the three errors that his defense committed in the fifth inning.

Despite Frisco's pitching problems, the bats went to work early and often.

Leadoff hitter Todd Donovan flashed his game-changing speed, as he was 3-for-5 with a triple.

Catcher Kevin Richardson (.238/.319/.524) also had three hits, including his fourth home run of the season.

Kevin Mahar (2/4, BB), Travis Metcalf (2/5, 2B), German Duran (2/5, 3B), and Emerson Frostad (2/5, HR) each had two hits. Frostad's home run was his third in 13 games.

Right fielder Anthony Webster made his 2007 debut as a late inning defensive replacement. He grounded out to the shortstop in his only at-bat.

A+: Bakersfield 2 – (@) Modesto 9
L – Schlact (1-1)

Bakersfield starter Michael Schlact got into trouble early, as he allowed two bunt singles and a walk to the first three hitters that he faced. Schlact went on to allow five runs in the first inning, but he seemed to settle down afterwards.

The 6-foot-7 hurler wasn't perfect, but he worked out of jams in the third through sixth innings. Schlact gave up five runs on nine hits over his six innings.

Second baseman Thomas Berkery had the team's only extra base hit. Berkery was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Left fielder Jake Blalock and catcher Brian Valichka each had two singles in four at-bats.

Left fielder K.C. Herren (.294/.368/.471) had his best game of the season, as he was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.

Starter Michael Ballard yielded five runs – four earned – on nine hits in just three innings. The southpaw did not walk a batter and fanned three.

Jose Vallejo had and Mauro Gomez each doubled for their only hit of the game.

UConn product John Slusarz (3.12 ERA/.242 BAA) gave up just a hit and a walk in two scoreless frames. Slusarz struck out three.

Tim Gudex allowed a pair of hits in the ninth inning, but did not let a run cross the plate. The left-hander has not surrendered a run in nine innings this season.
