Winterball Roundup - 1/10

Phillips pitched in Monday's game

Esteban German's Toros del Este club continued to roll through the Dominican Winter League round robin, posting victories on Sunday and Monday. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the winterball action.

Centerfielder Endy Chavez helped carry his Caribes club to a one-run victory on Sunday with two singles and a walk in four plate appearances.

Right-hander Guillermo Moscoso became the newest member of the Oakland A's system when he was traded earlier in the week. On Monday, Moscoso continued to pitch well in his native Venezuela, as he hurled six innings and yielded just one unearned run. The 27-year-old scattered seven hits and fanned two without walking a batter.

Dominican Winter League

Esteban German's Toros del Este club has taken a stranglehold of the circuit's round robin playoff standings. With victories on Sunday and Monday, the Toros now have a three-game lead with only four contests remaining.

German got the start both days. On Sunday, he was hitless in four official at-bats but drew a walk and scored a run. He was better on Monday evening, going 2-for-4 with a double and a base on balls. German is batting .255 in the postseason.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Reliever Mark Hamburger helped close out Ponce's 7-1 victory on Sunday by hurling 1.1 shutout innings. He didn't yield a hit, walked one, and struck out one. Zach Phillips appeared earlier in the contest and surrendered one run on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.

Mexican Pacific League

There were no games on Sunday or Monday. The league's second round is set to begin play on Tuesday night.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

The Bravos took home the 2010 Liga Paralela title with a best-of-three series victory over Caracas. The season concluded on December 22.

That Caracas club featured 19-year-old shortstop Edwin Garcia, who appeared in 23 games and went 15-for-66 (.227) with four doubles and a home run. He had 13 walks against only nine strikeouts.

Anzoategui hurler Jonathan Rojas shined over three starts, tossing 10 scoreless innings. The 22-year-old allowed three hits while walking two and striking out seven. Rojas doesn't have any state-side experience above the rookie level, but his strong performance earned him two appearances with the LVBP Caribes team.

David Paisano and Renny Osuna turned in impressive performances with the big La Guaira club in '09, but both were largely relegated to Liga Paralela this year after early season slumps.

Paisano played 25 games in Liga Paralela and hit .283 (30-for-106) with nine doubles, six walks, and five stolen bases in eight attempts.

The versatile Osuna played just about all over the diamond––appearing in 21 contests––and posted a .280/.314/.512 slash line with nine doubles, two triples, and two round-trippers in 87 plate appearances.

Lefty reliever Joe Ortiz pitched most of the campaign with the LVBP team but hurled three scoreless innings in three minor league relief appearances.
