The suddenly scuffling RedHawks were beaten by Jeff Samardzija for the second time in a week.

Rehabbing righty Rich Harden was touched up for six runs on seven hits [including two homers] over five innings. He threw 88 pitches [62 strikes] and walked one while fanning nine.

Mitch Moreland got the start at first base once again, and he raised his average to .291 with three singles in five plate appearances.

Second baseman Guilder Rodriguez (2/3, 2 2B) doubled twice while Jarrod Saltamacchia (2/5, 2B) doubled once.

A 26-year-old defensive whiz, Rodriguez has had multiple professional seasons with two extra-base hits or fewer in the entire year. He entered the day with one double and three triples in 83 games in 2010.

Catcher Max Ramirez singled twice and walked once in five plate appearances.

Sidearmers Clay Rapada and Cody Eppley posted identical lines––one inning, one hit, zero runs, zero walks, two strikeouts.

14-12, 1.5 GB

Starting pitcher Neil Ramirez (5.02 ERA/.299 BAA) permitted four runs [three earned] over five innings pitched. He allowed eight hits while walking two and striking out five.

In his second year with Hickory, the 21-year-old has improved his strikeout-to-walk ratio from 1.37 to 3.1. However, at the same time, opponents are hitting him at a much greater clip [.235 to .299] this season.

Reliever Daniel Gutierrez was knocked around in his frame, but a two-out error kept any of his runs from being earned. Gutierrez yielded six unearned runs on four hits and a walk in one inning of work.

Red-hot second baseman Travis Adair raised his average to .322 by going 4-for-5 with a solo home run. The round-tripper was the first of Adair’s three-year professional career.

Tim Stanford (1.17 ERA/.167 BAA) did another fine job in long relief. He pitched 3.1 shutout frames, permitting only one hit.
