Martin Perez picked up his first victory of the 2010 season on Wednesday while a late comeback helped push Hickory to a win. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's minor league action.

AAA: Oklahoma City - OFF
13-7, 2.0 GU

After beginning the year with 20 consecutive games, the RedHawks finally enjoyed their first day off of the 2010 season.

AA: Frisco 4 - San Antonio 2
W - Perez (1-0)
SV - Reed (1)
HR - Jenkins (1)
9-10, 1.0 GB

Martin Perez largely cruised through his first three innings on Wednesday, working on a economic pitch count and allowing just one run. While Perez surrendered only one more run in the final two innings, he walked four batters over that span.

In all, the 19-year-old southpaw gave up two runs in five innings of work, yielding four hits and walking four. He struck out five while throwing 79 pitches.

Making his Double-A debut, 6-foot-7 righty Adalberto Flores allowed only two singles in two scoreless innings. He struck out four.

Evan Reed earned his first save by retiring all six batters he faced, striking out three of them. He threw 17 of his 23 pitches for strikes.

In his first nine Double-A innings, the 24-year-old Reed has allowed one run on six hits, walking three and fanning nine. His low-to-mid-90s four-seam fastball has excellent life, and it has allowed him to get exactly two groundouts per flyout thus far.

Rehabbing second baseman Ian Kinsler played in his third game, and he singled twice and drove home two runs in four at-bats. He also stole a base.

Third baseman Andy Jenkins was 1-for-4 with a solo homer. Jenkins joined Frisco on Wednesday, as regular third baseman Jonathan Greene was placed on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

Matt Lawson (2/3, 2B) doubled once and singled once while Kevin Richardson (2/4) singled twice.

A+: Bakersfield 1 - Modesto 4 (6 innings – Rain)
L - Pimentel (2-1)
6-11, 5.5 GB

Bakersfield dropped its fifth consecutive game in a rain-shortened affair on Wednesday evening.

The game was called before the bottom of the sixth inning.

Starting pitcher Carlos Pimentel was about as up-and-down as it gets. He surrendered three first-inning runs after the first four batters of the game all got hits. The righty then settled down to retire 10 of the next 11 hitters he faced––before running into more problems.

Basically, Pimentel was streaky within his start. He wound up allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings, walking one and striking out three.

Designated hitter Chris Gradoville had half of Bakersfield’s hits, as he was 2-for-2 with a double. Gradoville is playing with the Blaze while catcher Jose Felix has returned home to tend to a personal issue.

David Paisano, who moved into the leadoff spot on Wednesday, singled twice and walked once, raising his average to .357.

Shortstop Davis Stoneburner walked twice and laid down a sacrifice bunt. In three plate appearances, he didn’t have an official at-bat.

In addition to Paisano moving into the leadoff spot, centerfielder Engel Beltre was pushed to the three-hole, while third baseman Tom Mendonca batted seventh.

A: Hickory 7 - (@) Charleston 5
W - Doyle (2-0)
SV - Lueke (7)
11-10, 1.0 GB

The Crawdads trailed the entire way––until they came up with five runs against the Charleston bullpen in the top of the ninth.

Facing Hickory for the second time in a week, RiverDogs starter Shaeffer Hall was outstanding, giving up just two runs [one earned] in eight innings. The University of Kansas product got an incredible 16 outs on the ground versus just three in the air.

But the bullpen wasn’t able to hold it.

Leadoff hitter Cody Podraza continued to crush the ball, going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs batted in. The 22-year-old Houston native has five consecutive multi-hit games during the road trip, going 11-for-22 with two doubles, a triple, two walks, and just one strikeout.

First baseman Michael Ortiz, who also appears to be heating up, was 2-for-4 with his second double of the year. Ortiz has six hits in his last two starts.

Miguel Velazquez (2/5), Cristian Santana (1/3, BB) and Jared Prince (0/3, 2 BB) all reached twice.

Starter Joe Wieland was excellent early, but he struggled later in the game, giving up four runs [three earned] on seven hits in 4.2 innings. Wieland walked two and struck out two.

Hard-throwing Miami native Hector Nelo lowered his ERA to 4.50 after he pitched 2.1 hitless innings. He fanned one without issuing a free pass.

Closer Josh Lueke gave up a walk and a double to begin the ninth, but he slammed the door with two swinging strikeouts and a groundout to short. The righty now has 20 punchouts in 9.1 innings.
