The Dominican Summer League doesn't get much press, but the Rangers' clubs got excellent starting pitching on Friday morning. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's minor league action.

AAA: Oklahoma 3 – New Orleans 5
L – Maeda (1-2)


Making his first start since being DFAed by the Rangers, Elizardo Ramirez surrendered three runs in six innings of work.

First baseman Chris Davis raised his average to .344 by going 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. One of the runs batted in came on a sacrifice fly.

Right fielder Nelson Cruz (1/3, 3B) hit his third triple of the season.

Ryan Roberts (1/3, 2B) doubled while Jason Ellison singled twice in four at-bats.

The Frisco bullpens surrendered the lead by giving up five runs in the top of the ninth inning, but they were able to win it on a Corey Ragsdale walkoff solo homer in the bottom of the frame.

Thomas Diamond got the start and walked six – while throwing 95 pitches – in 4.2 innings, but he allowed only two runs. Diamond gave up two hits and fanned two.

Max Ramirez was 1-for-3 with his 16th home run of the season.

Casey Benjamin (2/4, 3B) tripled while Steve Murphy (1/4, 2B), Ben Harrison (1/4, 2B) and Dustin Majewski (1/3, 2B, BB) all doubled.

Reliever Alfredo Gonzalez (5.09 ERA/.275 BAA) had his third consecutive shutdown long relief outing by limiting the Hooks to no runs on one hit in 3.1 innings. He struck out two without walking a batter.

Andrew Laughter blew the lead by allowing five runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning. The outing raised his previously miniscule Double-A ERA to 4.32.

A+: Bakersfield 7 – San Jose 11 (11 innings)
L – Lueke (2-3)


Evan Reed yielded five runs on seven hits in four innings, walking and striking out three apiece.

J.T. Restko (3/5, 2B) and Chris Gradoville (1/5, 2B) had Bakersfield’s only extra-base hits.

Shortstop Marcus Lemon singled three times, drove in three runs, and committed three errors. He now has 17 errors on the year.

Julio Borbon singled twice and swiped his 31st base.

Davis Stoneburner also singled twice while K.C. Herren walked three times for the second consecutive game.

The Blaze bullpen struggled as a whole on Friday, but Jordan Stewart was able to toss two hitless innings, recording two strikeouts.

Starter Fabio Castillo (4.80 ERA/.243 BAA) allowed four runs on four hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out three.

In 17 games [five starts] and 54.1 innings pitched, Castillo is still without a win on the season.

Two-hole hitter Matt Lawson and three-hole hitter Tim Smith each went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Smith and Lawson also both stole their eighth base of the season.

Right fielder Mitch Moreland singled, walked, and drove in a pair of runs.

Hector Nelo fanned three in two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit.

Michael Kirkman’s second start of the year was solid. He worked five innings and allowed two runs on four hits. More importantly, the lefty walked just two batters while striking out four.

Engel Beltre and Renny Osuna each went 2-for-4 with a double.

DH Mitch Moreland singled and walked in three trips to the plate.

Making his first start of the season, right-hander Pepe Sibid hurled five hitless innings. He walked three batters and struck out six.

The 20-year-old posted a 4.28 ERA in 27.1 innings for the DSL Rangers last summer.

Second baseman Alejandro Selen provided a two-run homer for his lone hit of the game in the second inning.

Catcher Tomas Telis (2/5, 2 2B) doubled twice while RF Juan Polanco (1/4, 2B, BB) had a double and a walk.

Relief pitchers Ezequiel Rijo (1 IP), Denny Peralta (0.2 IP) and Ender Rosendo (2.1 IP) helped to complete the shutout.

The Rangers rallied for the victory with three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Starter Miguel Munoz (4.40 ERA/.250 BAA) was more than dominant, recording 12 strikeouts over six innings. He gave up just one unearned run on four hits and did not walk a batter.

Munoz, 20, has fanned 21 hitters in 14.1 innings this season.

The Rangers scored four runs on only two hits. Edward Ceballo (1/4, 2B) and Junior Payano (1/2, 2B, BB) both doubled.

Relief pitcher Kelvin Arrendell (0.66 ERA/.216 BAA) tossed two shutout innings to earn his third victory of the year.
