Mauro Gomez was perfect at the plate

The organization was nearly perfect on Sunday, as Edinson Volquez was phenomenal and Bakersfield pulled out an extra-inning victory. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's minor league action.

Left fielder Jason Botts raised his May average to .366, as he was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in. Botts has recorded multiple hits in four of his last five games.

Frank Catalanotto doubled and walked in two plate appearances.

Desi Relaford went 2-for-3 with a home run while Marlon Byrd was 2-for-5 with a double.

Catcher Guillermo Quiroz (.344/.386/.422) singled twice in four at-bats.

Scuffling starting pitcher Alfredo Simon (8.31 ERA/.320 BAA) surrendered at least ten hits while working four innings or fewer for the third time in as many starts. The righty gave up six runs on 10 hits in only four innings.

Left-hander A.J. Murray tossed two perfect innings in his first Triple-A appearance since getting roughed up in his Major League debut.

John Mayberry (.227/.299/.489) had just one hit in six at-bats, but it was his 12th home run of the season.

Shortstop Matt Smith (.294/.386/.311) led the team with three hits – including a double and a walk – in six at-bats.

DH Taylor Teagarden doubled and walked, 2B Micah Furtado had a home run, and 1B Freddie Thon was 2-for-5 with a double.

Starter Kendy Batista (4.30 ERA/.268 BAA) yielded three runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. Batista walked two and struck out eight.

Craig Crow walked two in 1 2/3 hitless innings.

Josh Giles (6.23 ERA/.274 BAA) picked up the win with three innings of hitless relief. Giles walked two and struck out two.

Clinton starter Michael Ballard continued his string of strong starts with five shutout innings on Sunday. The lefty gave up four hits while walking none and striking out four.

Every member of the L-King lineup had at least one base hit. Left fielder K.C. Herren (2/4, HR) and first baseman Mauro Gomez (3/3, 2B, HR) led the way.

Third baseman John Whittleman was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks while Chad Tracy and Kevin Gossage doubled for their only hits.

Iowa product Tim Gudex surrendered one run on one hit in three innings. He walked one and struck out three.
