Oklahoma starter Francisco Cruceta (4.15 ERA/.204 BAA) allowed three hits in five innings, but six walks led to four runs (three earned). The hard-throwing righty added seven strikeouts in the no-decision.
The middle of the RedHawks' order came through on Thursday, as Marlon Byrd hit his first home run of the season, Jason Botts was 2-for-5, Kevin West went 3-for-4, and third baseman Desi Relaford was 3-for-4 with a double.
Six-foot-seven, 260-pound reliever Franklyn German (2.77 ERA/.217 BAA) got the win with two scoreless innings. German gave up two hits, walked one, and fanned two.
W – Mathis (2-1)
HR – Metcalf (4), Benjamin (1), Fox (1)
The RoughRiders put together an outstanding all-around performance on Thursday, as starting pitcher Doug Mathis pitched a gem while the offense pounded out ten runs.
Mathis (1.93 ERA/.261 BAA) surrendered just one run on six hits – all singles – in seven innings. The Mizzou product walked one and punched out five.
At the plate, leadoff hitter Casey Benjamin (.272/.356/.370) was a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple, a home run, and three runs batted in. Benjamin also helped turn three double plays for the ‘Riders.
First baseman Adam Fox (.348/.434/.457) and third baseman Travis Metcalf (.290/.349/.495) also went deep. Metcalf also doubled and walked.
L – Volquez (0-3)
With just seven hits between the two teams, the Blaze and Mavericks played a quick game on Thursday night.
Bakersfield starter Edinson Volquez (8.26 ERA/.221 BAA) gave up three runs on three hits in five innings while walking three and fanning six. Volquez also threw a wild pitch and hit a batter.
Left fielder Brandon Boggs (2/4, 2B) and shortstop Thomas Berkery (2/3, 2 SB) accounted for all of Bakersfield's offense.
Reliever J.B. Diaz (3.80 ERA/.282 BAA) finished the game with three perfect innings, recording a pair of strikeouts.
W – Coffman (2-0)
Left-hander Broc Coffman (2.36 ERA/.260 BAA) threw six scoreless innings for the L-Kings on Thursday. Coffman gave up five hits while walking one and fanning one.
Clinton won despite having just one extra base hit. Catcher Manny Pina was 2-for-4 with a double, his third of the season.
Second baseman Jose Vallejo (.319/.368/.375), DH Chad Tracy (.265/.286/.418), and shortstop Marcus Lemon (.212/.288/.258) each singled twice in four at-bats.
Vallejo, Tracy, and Lemon also swiped one bag apiece.
Third baseman John Whittleman didn't record a hit, as he was 0-for-3 with a free pass.
Six-foot-six lefty Scott Rice tossed a perfect inning, fanning two.
