The Braves Show's Bill Shanks talks with Ron Mahay, acquired from the Rangers in the big Mark…
Highlights hard to come by in loss
Slim pickens here.
Marlon Byrd isn't going down without a fight. He's probably viewed as a longshot to make the roster with the play of guys like Hairston and Kata, but Byrd hit a two-run homer in the sixth to get the Rangers on the board and added an RBI single as part of a 2 for 3 afternoon.
Jason Botts also added two base hits.
It was hard to find anything good from a pitching standpoint, but Jesse Ingram had the best outing of the day going 2/3 of an inning setting the two guys he faced down in order. And yes, I'm serious, this was the best pitching line of the day.
You know your team is having an off day when two of the most sure-handed of fielders in Michael Young and Mark Teixeira commit errors. Such was the case today when Young threw a ball into right field trying to get an out at 2nd, and Teixeira let one get under his glove.
The pitching. Just look at some of these lines:
Kevin Millwood: 10 runs on 12 hits and 2 walks in 4.2 innings.
Wes Littleton: 2 runs, 2 hits, 2 walks in an inning.
Eric Gagne: 4 runs on 5 hits in an inning.
Even newcomer Ezequiel Astacio got into the action, allowing a run on a hit and two walks in his inning of action. But Ron Mahay may have taken the cake with his disturbing pitching line. He allowed seven runs on four hits, walked three batters, and only recorded one out. I know it's spring, but his earned run average from today only would stand at 189.00.
Minor leaguer Adam Fox and pitcher Ezequiel Astacio, claimed off waivers from the Houston Astros, both were placed on the 40-man roster on Monday. The Rangers wanted to designate relief pitcher Rick Bauer for assignment but because of standard procedures, couldn't do that unless they had more than 40 players.
Fox will likely be dropped later in the week when the Rangers need room on the 40-man again. Others expected to be moved off the roster include pitcher Francisco Cruceta and catcher Guillermo Quiroz.
Sammy Sosa was scratched from today's lineup for the second day in a row because of a stomach virus.
Vicente Padilla gets the ball first on Wednesday as the Rangers take on the Mariners in Peoria. It will be their second to the last spring game in Arizona.
