Pitching struggles through a tough afternoon

Victor Diaz crosses home after a two-run homer

Victor Diaz makes a strong push to win a backup job as the Rangers fall to the Giants in Scottsdale.

The Good

In a losing effort, an offense with basically no regulars still piled up 14 hits. Victor Diaz puts together a 2 for 3 afternoon with three runs scored, two runs batted in, and his second homerun of the spring.

Jason Botts, playing the role of DH today, added an RBI double in the second inning.

Steven Murphy, who was on loan from minor league camp, also added three runs batted in with two of them coming via the longball in the ninth inning.

The Ugly

The Ugly awards for this afternoon go to the entire Ranger pitching staff. Robinson Tejeda started the game and allowed four of the first five Giants to reach base. In his two innings of work, he surrendered two runs on three hits while walking three batters.

Following him, Francisco Cruceta, Josh Rupe, Rick Bauer, and Ron Mahay combined to allow a grand total of 14 hits and 11 runs. Rupe had the roughest performance of the afternoon by far after he allowed four runs on seven hits in 2 2/3.

Notable

Jamey Wright will get the ball first Sunday afternoon in Surprise against the Angels.
