Rangers Prospect Video: Beras, Guzman (5/23)
Two prospects who have yet to play an official game in 2013 showed off their impressive raw power during batting practice at the Texas Rangers' extended spring training workout on Thursday morning.
Outfileder Jairo Beras, 18, is shown in the video below. Listed at 6-foot-6, 190 lbs., the Dominican Republic native signed with the Rangers in July 2012 for a reported $4.5 million bonus. His bonus amount was the second-largest ever for a Latin American amateur prospect; fellow Rangers farmhand Nomar Mazara ($4.95 million) holds the record.
The detailed story behind Beras' complicated signing saga can be found at this link.
Although Beras is currently suspended until the beginning of July, he is able to play in extended spring training games––which are largely unofficial scrimmages. Even if Beras were eligible for official competition right now, he'd almost certainly be at extended spring training regardless. Beras will miss the first two weeks of the short-season schedule but should open the summer with either the rookie Surprise Rangers or short-season Spokane Indians.
The powerful outfielder has been inconsistent at the plate in both spring training and extended spring games, but his present and projected power is certainly elite. He socked a pair of home runs in Tuesday's extended spring game, giving him three on the campaign thus far. You'll be able to read more detailed analysis of Beras in a post-extended spring notes piece, coming next week at Lone Star Dugout.
The following video shows Beras' batting practice rounds from Thursday's workout.
First baseman Ronald Guzman, also 18, is currently rehabbing in Arizona after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee on March 15. The injury kept Guzman out for most of spring training, and he will end up missing approximately two months of the regular season.
Likely to join the talented Single-A Hickory squad in the near future, Guzman returned to game action at extended spring training last week. He's yet to play a full nine innings and may remain in Arizona for another week or two.
While Beras' profile is more centered around his plus-plus raw power, Guzman is more of a hit tool-minded player with a mature swing and average-to-plus raw juice. Both prospects are massive––Beras is a legit 6-foot-6, and Guzman has grown to 6-foot-5 and one-half inches. Also a Dominican Republic native, Guzman can let it fly at times in batting practice, as he flashed during Thursday's BP session shown in the video below.
Beras will make his official pro debut later this summer. Guzman did so in the rookie Arizona League last season, posting a .321/.374/.434 slash line with 15 doubles, three triples, and one home run in 52 games. He drew 19 walks, struck out 42 times, and stole seven bases in eight attempts.
