Scouting Phils Prospect #13: Tyler Cloyd

The 2012 season was a huge year for Tyler Cloyd, who went from an unknown prospect to pitching well in Philadelphia. Now, he has to battle to make it back to Philly and show just how good he can be.

Tyler Cloyd

Position: Starting Pitcher
Bats/Throws: Right / Right
Birthday/Age: May 16, 1987 (25)
Ht/Wt: 6' 3", 190 pounds

How he became a Phillie: Drafted by the Phillies in the 18th round of the 2008 Draft.

Repertoire: Cloyd changes speeds on his fastball and can drop it as low as the upper-80s or push it up to the mid-90s. He compliments the fastball with a slider that has movement. While his repertoire isn't very deep, the fact that he changes speeds pretty easily gives Cloyd an edge. The other key for Cloyd is that his control is very good and he commands all of his pitches.

Scouting Report: Some scouts believe that Cloyd is best suited to pitch out of the bullpen, most likely in middle relief. The Phillies believe Cloyd can be better than that and have kept him in the starting rotation, but long-term, there could be some consideration to moving him to the pen, much like the Phillies did - at least temporarily - with Kyle Kendrick. Although Cloyd's 4.91 ERA with the Phillies wasn't where you want it to be, keep in mind that he hadn't pitched above Double-A prior to last season and still has a lot to learn.

Ceiling: This is going to be an interesting season for Cloyd, because there really isn't room for him in the Phillies rotation, so they'll have to think about whether or not they want to move him to the pen and keep him in the majors or send him down to Lehigh Valley and keep him in the rotation there as insurance for the big league club. Don't look for Cloyd to be a top of the rotation type starter. Best case scenario is that he can work his way into the middle of the rotation at some point in his career, but that's likely going to take some time. Odds are that he's going to be at least the caliber of Kendrick and if things break right for him, he could be a notch above.

ETA: Cloyd already made it to the majors last season and he'll likely be back at some point in the 2013 season. He's not likely to be a regular in Philly until 2014 at least.
