Rollins on Team USA roster for WBC

The Team USA roster for the World Baseball Classic was released this morning. Only one current Phillies player is on the roster, but there is one other former Phillie that will represent the US as well. The WBC begins March 2nd.

Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins will be playing with Team USA in the 2013 version of the World Baseball Classic, which is set to begin March 2nd. Team USA is in Pool D, which plays in Phoenix, Arizona. Mexico, Canada and Italy are also in Pool D.

Rollins was on the 2009 team that lost in the semi-finals to Japan. It's expected that Rollins will be the starting shortstop on this year's team. Former Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino, who was also on the 2009 team, is again on the roster and will likely be playing a bench role for Team USA.

Two other players - Ryan Braun and David Wright - also played on the 2009 team and are back for a second go-round in 2013. The team will be managed by Joe Torre, whose coaches include former Phillies manager Larry Bowa and former Phillies outfielder Dale Murphy. Bowa will be Torre's bench coach, while Murphy will coach first base.

One other player on the team was a member of the Phillies minor league organization in the past. Ryan Vogelsong, who pitched at Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2010 is one of the starters.

To help avoid injuries, there are pitch count limitations in place. Starters can throw only 65 pitches in the first round, 80 in round two and 95 in the semi-finals and finals and must have four days off if they throw over 50 pitches. Relievers are allowed to pitch back-to-back days, but only if they did not throw 30 or more pitches in the first game. They are also required to have at least one day off if they are used in back-to-back games, regardless of how many pitches they throw.

The WBC Championship will be played March 19 at AT&T Park in San Francisco.
