After beginning his Venezuelan winterball campaign with four consecutive scoreless starts, Zulia right-hander Wilfredo Boscan allowed his first runs of the season on Wednesday. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Arizona Fall League: Surprise 3 – Salt River 8
13-11-1

Wednesday’s 8-3 defeat at the hands of Salt River was an all-around forgettable day for the Texas Rangers’ prospects with the Surprise Saguaros.

Ben Henry, making his third Fall League start, threw only 27 of his 60 pitches for a strike in two-plus innings. He surrendered four runs on three hits, four walks, and a hit batter. He struck out three.

Although Henry’s fastball flirted with the mid-90s late in the regular season at High-A Myrtle Beach, he hasn’t been able to find that same peak velocity while returning from a minor injury this fall. The Surprise Stadium pitch f/x data showed his fastball sitting between 88-90 mph and topping out at 91 on Wednesday.

Leadoff-hitting second baseman Luis Sardinas whiffed three times in five hitless at-bats. First baseman Chris McGuiness (0/4, K) also went without a knock while catcher Kellin Deglan had a single in three at-bats.

Pitching in relief of Henry, sidearming righty Ben Rowen hurled two scoreless innings. The Virginia Tech product gave up a hit and struck out two.

Ryan Rodebaugh (3.09 ERA/.200 BAA) finished the game for Surprise with two hitless, scoreless innings. He walked one and fanned one.

True to his Fall League form thus far, Rodebaugh flashed an 89-91 mph fastball––topping out at 92 once––to go along with a big-breaking 73-74 mph curveball and a harder breaker at 81.

Dominican Winter League

Right-hander Carlos Pimentel, who had been working out of the Leones del Escogido bullpen, earned the starting nod for his club on Wednesday–-and it didn’t go particularly well. Pimentel was knocked around for five runs (four earned) in 1.2 innings. He gave up four hits and walked two without recording a strikeout.

Gigantes del Cibao shortstop Jean Segura got the big hit off Pimentel, a two-run homer in the second inning.

Gigantes infielder Leury Garcia entered as a late-inning defensive replacement at third base, and he had an RBI single in his only plate appearance.

Centerfielder Leonys Martin went 1-for-3 with a triple, a sacrifice fly, and two RBI for the Tigres del Licey. He also committed his fourth error of the winterball season. Left fielder Engel Beltre was 0-for-2 but laid down a sacrifice bunt.

Venezuelan Winter League

Aguilas del Zulia starting pitcher Wilfredo Boscan (0.81 ERA/.228 BAA) allowed his first runs of the winterball campaign on Wednesday. Boscan didn’t permit a run until his fifth start.

On Wednesday, the right-hander gave up four runs (two earned) on eight hits in 4.2 innings, walking one and striking out two. He threw 42 of his 59 pitches for a strike.

The 23-year-old hurler now has the following stat-line in those five starts–-22.1 ip, 18 h, 2 er, 6 bb, 15 k.

Making his first appearance in over a week, La Guaira right-handed reliever Arlett Mavare (7.50 ERA/.320 BAA) worked around a walk in an otherwise clean inning. The 22-year-old Mavare has given up five runs in six innings this season, his first winterball campaign.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

Caracas catcher Tomas Telis singled twice in four at-bats, and he also stole a base. The Caracas club, which has a number of Rangers farmhands, improved its record to 16-4 after Wednesday’s victory over the Caribes.

Mexican Pacific League

Following a strong performance on Tuesday, Mazatlan right fielder Joey Butler returned to his club’s cleanup spot on Wednesday and posted two singles and an intentional walk in five plate appearances.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Begins November 8.
