Springfield leads 1-0 (best of five)

Tuesday's Texas League Championship Series opener between Frisco and Springfield was a pitcher's duel between a pair of 20-year-old prospects––the Rangers' Cody Buckel and the Cardinals' Carlos Martinez.

Martinez got the best of Buckel, as he tossed seven innings of four-hit shutout ball while throwing just 87 pitches. He struck out seven and walked one.

Although the RoughRiders trailed the Cardinals just 1-0 at the seventh-inning stretch, Springfield struck for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away.

Buckel surrendered two runs on four hits in six-plus innings, striking out five without issuing a walk. Both of his runs allowed came on solo home runs.

After Buckel exited, lefty reliever Tim Murphy permitted a run while recording one out. Ryan Rodebaugh then gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning.

At the plate for Frisco, third baseman Tom Mendonca led the way by going 2-for-4 with his first double of the postseason. Engel Beltre (1/4), Ryan Strausborger (1/4) and Jared Hoying (1/3) singled for the club's other hits.

Rehabbing Rangers catcher Mike Napoli grounded out, struck out, and was hit by a pitch in his three plate appearances.
