Garcia had two singles and a walk

Speedsters Leury Garcia and Julio Borbon played against each other on Saturday, with Borbon's team earning a spot in the Dominican Winter League championship series. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Venezuelan Winter League


Aragua shortstop and leadoff hitter Luis Hernandez had a single and a walk in five trips. He also committed two errors in the field. Second baseman Yangervis Solarte went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and a walk.

The Tigres de Aragua have a 7-3 record in the postseason, just one-half game behind the Caribes.



Dominican Winter League


The Leones del Escogido clinched a spot in the Dominican Winter League's championship series––a chance to play for a spot in the Serie del Caribe–-with a 10-6 victory over Cibao on Saturday evening.

Escogido leadoff hitter Julio Borbon played a hand in the win, going 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk, and his first stolen base of the postseason. He is now batting .239 in the playoffs.

With a 10-5 record, the Leones sit three games ahead of Cibao and Licey (7-8) and four games above Aguilas Cibaenas (6-9).

Speedy second baseman Leury Garcia got his first start of the playoffs for Cibao, also batting leadoff, and went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run batted in. He was caught stealing second base as well. First baseman Brad Nelson singled once in four at-bats,d riving home two runs.



Mexican Pacific League


Guasave catcher Jose Felix entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and struck out in his lone plate appearance. Though the Algodoneros lost on Saturday, they lead the best-of-seven semifinal series against Culiacan, 2-1.



Puerto Rican Winter League


The Ponce club was eliminated from the postseason on Thursday, meaning Mayaguez will face Caguas in the Puerto Rican Winter League final best-of-nine series. Only two Rangers appeared in Puerto Rico this winter––both for Ponce.

Catcher Kevin Torres, 21, played in seven games for the Leones, going 2-for-7 with a walk and two strikeouts. Sidearming left-hander Alexander Claudio made three appearances––including one start––for Ponce and worked 5.2 scoreless innings, yielding five hits, walking four, and striking out four.
