Hernandez hit a two-run homer
Aragua shortstop Luis Hernandez continued his hot-hitting in the Venezuelan Winter League postseason, as he socked a two-run homer on Thursday. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.
Venezuelan Winter League
Tigres de Aragua shortstop Luis Hernandez socked a two-run homer in the fifth inning, his first round-tripper of the Venezuelan Winter League’s postseason. He was 1-for-4 on the game. Yangervis Solarte, who has played second base for much of the playoffs, got the night off.
La Guaira’s Renny Osuna appeared as a pinch runner in the top of the ninth inning, but he didn’t have a plate appearance.
Dominican Winter League
Gigantes del Cibao designated hitter Brad Nelson, who was recently re-signed to a minor league deal by the Rangers, played the first eight innings and went 1-for-2 with two walks. After Thursday’s 6-4 victory over the Aguilas, Cibao is now in third place in the Dominican Winter League’s postseason, three games behind first-place Escogido.
Mexican Pacific League
There were no games on Wednesday, and Jose Felix’s Guasave team was knocked out of the playoffs on Sunday. During the regular season, Felix appeared in 31 games and posted a .203/.222/.342 slash line with three home runs in 82 plate appearances. Used primarily for his defensive skills behind the plate, Felix gunned down 6-of-15 (.400) attempted base stealers.
The only other Rangers prospect to appear in Liga Mexicana del Pacifico this season was sidearming righty Cody Eppley, who pitched for Obregon from the beginning of the season until Thanksgiving. The 26-year-old reliever worked primarily as the team’s closer, logging seven saves and posting a 3.10 ERA over 20 appearances. In 20.1 innings, he yielded 18 hits while walking seven and striking out 26. Eppley’s heavy 88-91 mph sinker and deceptive delivery helped induce more than 3.4 groundouts per flyout while limiting fellow right-handers to a .238 batting average.
Puerto Rican Winter League
No Rangers appeared in Thursday’s game.
