Leones del Escogido left fielder Julio Borbon reached base three times in Tuesday's game in the Dominican Republic. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Venezuelan Winter League

Aragua’s Luis Hernandez (.263/.321/.316) went 0-for-3 but drove home two runs, including one on a sacrifice fly.

Catcher Yorvit Torrealba was 0-for-3 with a walk for Caracas, and he was also caught stealing. In 14 games this winter, the veteran is 11-for-45 (.244) with a double, a home run, three walks, and four strikeouts.

Guilder Rodriguez appeared as a late-inning defensive substitution for Lara at second base, but he didn’t have a plate appearance.

Margarita shortstop Alberto Gonzalez (.256/.313/.387) singled once in four at-bats.

The Rangers signed Hernandez and Rodriguez to minor league contracts with an invitation to major league spring training earlier this offseason, as the club weights its options for a utility infielder in 2012. Gonzalez played the entire ’11 campaign in the majors with the Washington Nationals.

Dominican Winter League

Escogido leadoff man Craig Gentry’s batting average fell to .163 after he went 0-for-5, striking out twice, on Tuesday evening. Gentry also drew a walk. Julio Borbon, who batted seventh and played left field, was 1-for-3 with a double, two walks, and his fifth stolen base.

Borbon isn’t known for having particularly high walk rates, but he has drawn 10 free passes with 83 official at-bats so far this winter.

Escogido lefty specialist Corey Young appeared in his second game with the club and walked the only batter he faced. The runner didn’t come around to score, as former Rangers hurler Merkin Valdez finished the inning.

Mexican Pacific League

No Rangers appeared in Tuesday’s games.

Puerto Rican Winter League

No Rangers appeared in Tuesday’s games.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

La Guaira took two-of-three games against Aragua to capture the 2011 Liga Paralela championship. Right-hander Arlett Mavare pitched in the first game for La Guaira, entering in relief and tossing four scoreless innings. He gave up three hits, walked two, and struck out six.

Following a good regular season with the rookie-level Arizona Rangers and short-season Spokane Indians, Mavare pitched extremely well in Venezuela this winter. He posted a 1.37 ERA in seven appearances. Over 26.1 innings, he yielded just 12 hits while walking 11 and striking out 23.

The 21-year-old hurler stands just 6-foot-0 and doesn’t have overpowering velocity––sitting mostly between 88-90 mph––but he has excellent command and a mature curveball with a usable changeup.
