Young pitched in his first winterball game
Left-handed reliever Corey Young made his winterball debut in the Dominican Republic on Friday, retiring the only hitter he faced. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.
Venezuelan Winter League
The Bravos de Margarita pounded out 17 hits and 13 runs on Friday evening, but leadoff hitter and shortstop Alberto Gonzalez was the only player to go without a knock. Gonzalez, who signed a minor league deal with the Rangers earlier in the week, went 0-for-6, dropping his average to .235.
A versatile glove-first infielder, Gonzalez also received an invitation to major league spring training.
Aragua had only three hits as a team on Friday, but two of them came from second baseman Yangervis Solarte, who had two singles in four trips. Nine-hole hitting shortstop Luis Hernandez was 0-for-3 and committed his sixth error in the field.
Yorvit Torrealba had one single in three at-bats as the starting catcher for Caracas.
Dominican Winter League
Catcher Dusty Brown appeared as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and struck out in his only plate appearance, dropping his average to .308 through six games.
Left-handed reliever Corey Young got into his first game with Escogido and retired the only batter he faced––outfielder Felix Pie––on a flyout. With a deceptive low three-quarters delivery and a good curveball, Young is tough on lefties and a good fit for Caribbean winterball, where relievers are often used in matchup situations.
Mexican Pacific League
Guasave backstop Jose Felix got into the game behind the plate in the ninth inning but didn’t get a plate appearance.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Ponce catcher Kevin Torres grounded out in an eighth-inning at-bat as a pinch hitter. The 21-year-old has appeared off the bench in five games thus far, going hitless in four trips.
Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)
No Rangers appeared in Friday’s games.
