24-10, 9.0 GU
Ryan Kelly's first start for the Saguaros was a success, as he tossed three innings of hitless ball and struck out five. The second outing––which came on Tuesday––was fairly disastrous.
The right-hander threw 50 pitches in 1.1 innings, yielding six runs on five hits and four walks. He threw more balls (26) than strikes (24) in the outing and surrendered two home runs.
While the 24-year-old has pitched well at times in the Fall League, he has pitched very poorly in two outings in which he has combined to allow 10 earned runs in two innings. His overall line––14 ip, 14 h, 13 r, 11 bb, 11 k.
The Surprise offense played well once again, but it wasn't quite enough in the end.
Cleanup hitter Mike Olt (.354/.432/.798) extended his hitting streak to 15 games, going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two runs batted in. He also struck out once.
The performance actually lowered Olt's slugging percentage two points.
Leury Garcia (.342/.361/.570) had a triple and a sacrifice fly––leading to three runs batted in––during his four plate appearances. The switch-hitting shortstop has 10 extra-base hits in 19 AFL games after only 27 in 109 games during the regular season.
As always, it's important to stress the Arizona Fall League's extreme hitter-friendly environment, although what Olt and Garcia (along with Ryan Strausborger) are currently doing is certainly impressive relative to their peers.
Strausborger was 0-for-4, striking out twice and driving in one run.
Batting fifth and playing in right field in his second game with Magallanes, Joey Butler went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
Butler's Magallanes and Triple-A Round Rock teammate Tanner Scheppers (0.82 ERA/.143 BAA) struck out two in a perfect ninth inning. Although Scheppers has allowed only one earned run on five hits in 11 innings, he has walked 13 batters (four intentional).
Escogido left fielder Julio Borbon saw his average fall to .163 after he went hitless in three at-bats, striking out once. The 25-year-old is now just 1-for-17 over his last eight games played.
Licey's Engel Beltre grounded into a fielder's choice in his lone plate appearance.
Right-handed reliever Fabio Castillo––pitching in his second game of the season––recorded the first out of the sixth inning without allowing a run. He also walked a batter.
Cody Eppley (2.84 ERA/.227 BAA) worked around a walk and a hit batter while tossing his eighth consecutive scoreless inning. He has the following line in 18 appearances this year––19 ip, 15 h, 6 er, 7 bb, 22 k.
Guasave starting catcher Jose Felix went hitless in three more at-bats. Although the 23-year-old is excellent defensively, he is just 7-for-48 (.146) in his first 15 winterball games this season.
