Garcia hit a solo home run
Surprise Saguaros shortstop Leury Garcia is better known for his defense and speed than his power, but he launched his second home run in as many games on Wednesday. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.
Arizona Fall League: Surprise 2 – Salt River 6
14-5, 5.0 GU
After going 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday’s contest, switch-hitting shortstop Leury Garcia has now hit safely in each of his first 10 Arizona Fall League games.
The 5-foot-7 Garcia also hit his second round-tripper in as many days. He has only seven career homers in 328 regular season games between the rookie-level Arizona League and High-A Myrtle Beach. Garcia now has a .386/.413/.636 slash line in the relatively small sample of 46 plate appearances.
Taxi squad player and centerfielder Leonys Martin went 0-for-3 but reached once after getting plunked by a pitch. He also committed a fielding error. As a taxi squad player, Martin will likely only play on Wednesdays and Saturdays. He is 1-for-12 in his first three games, with the one knock being a solo home run.
Ryan Strausborger (.282/.317/.564 in 11 games) and catcher Elio Sarmiento both singled once in three trips.
Pan American Games
The United States finished with a co-bronze medal in the Baseball World Cup and later took home silver at the Pan American Games. In the two tournaments combined, third baseman Tom Mendonca went 16-for-59 (.271) with four doubles, four homers, and 17 RBI in 16 games. He drew two walks and struck out 22 times. First baseman Chad Tracy was 5-for-38 (.132) with a double and four runs batted in.
Venezuelan Winter League
Joe Ortiz sat down both hitters he faced––striking out one––to pick up his fifth hold in seven appearances. The 21-year-old lefty has allowed only one base runner in 4.1 innings.
Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)
No Rangers appeared on Wednesday. There likely won’t be many Rangers in the league, as the club is currently having instructional league at its Dominican Republic complex.
Dominican Winter League
Engel Beltre entered the Licey game as a pinch runner in the seventh inning. He scored a run in the seventh before striking out in his lone plate appearance. After an excellent winterball campaign last year, Beltre is just 3-for-16 (.188) so far this season.
Escogido leadoff man and left fielder Julio Borbon went 0-for-2 before being lifted for a pinch hitter. He also picked up an outfield assist by gunning down Eugenio Velez at second base.
Mexican Pacific League
Yaquis de Obregon closer Cody Eppley suffered his first blown save on Wednesday, as he surrendered a run on two hits and a walk during the ninth inning. He also struck out two.
Eppley has the following stat-line through seven appearances––8 ip, 8 h, 4 r, 5 bb, 7 k with 15 groundouts per airout.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Begins November 4.
