L - Tomko (0-2)
5-4, 1.0 GB
During Round Rock's eight-game home stand against Iowa and Omaha, the Express offense crushed 17 home runs. And in their first game away from home, they were held scoreless on only four hits.
That didn't bode well for veteran starter Brett Tomko, who suffered the loss despite working into the seventh inning. Tomko went 6.1 frames, giving up three runs on three hits. He walked three and fanned two.
Playing in his second game at the Triple-A level, right fielder Joey Butler batted seventh and went 1-for-4 with a double and three strikeouts.
DH Craig Gentry (1/4, 2B), LF Doug Deeds (1/4), and C Taylor Teagarden (1/3) had the other hits. In his first four games, Teagarden is 4-for-12 with a double, two homers, a walk, and four strikeouts.
3-4, 2.5 GB
Jake Brigham's second Double-A start was pushed back due to rain. The RoughRiders and Cardinals will play a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 2:07 p.m. Central. Frisco's scheduled starters are Brigham and Miguel de los Santos.
W - Erlin (1-0)
SV - Kelly (3)
4-3, 1.0 GB
Friday evening's contest was a matchup of solid pitching prospects, with the Rangers' Robbie Erlin giong against hard-throwing Braves righty Arodys Vizcaino.
Erlin won the battle with his dazzling performance that resembled many of his outings at Single-A Hickory last season. The southpaw worked six innings, giving up a solo round-tripper for his only hit and run allowed. He walked one and struck out seven.
In only his second High-A start, the California native retired 17 of the 19 batters he faced while seeing just one over the minimum (one double play ball).
Slugging third baseman Mike Olt (.478/.613/.913) had another huge night, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and two walks. Olt is 11-for-23 with six extra-base hits and eight walks in his first seven games of the season.
Left fielder Travis Adair, who is also off to a fast start, was 2-for-4 with his second double.
First baseman Chris McGuiness singled twice in five trips, driving home a pair of runs.
Pelicans closer Ryan Kelly pitched up his third save of the season in an extended outing. The righty, who runs his fastball up to 96 mph, permitted a run on four singles, walking none and fanning three.
L - Thompson (0-2)
5-4, 2.5 GB
The Crawdads were torn apart by 2010 White Sox second-round pick Jake Petricka, who hurled five scoreless innings while striking out seven. In fact, every Hickory starter fanned at least one on Friday, combining for 12 overall.
Catcher Kellin Deglan struggled the most, as he was 0-for-4 with three punchouts. The former first-round pick has begun his season in a 2-for-16 slump, striking out seven times.
Three- and four-hole hitters Tomas Telis (3/5, 2B) and Andrew Clark (2/4, 2B, BB) remained hot, as they combined to reach base six times on the night.
Starter Matt Thompson fell to 0-2 after he allowed four runs––two earned––over 5.1 innings. The native Texan yielded five hits while walking one, hitting two, and striking out six.
Virginia Commonwealth product Joe Van Meter worked around a walk in 1.2 scoreless, hitless innings out of the bullpen.
