Winterball Roundup - 12/23

Ramirez reached base three times

La Guaira DH Max Ramirez and third baseman Renny Osuna had one single and two walks apiece on Thursday evening. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action.

Venezuelan Winter League

Magallanes leadoff man Endy Chavez (.245/.325/.309) extended his modest hitting streak to five games by going 2-for-5 with a double, a walk, and three runs scored. The veteran outfielder has 13 walks and 11 strikeouts in 27 games this winter.

Right fielder Erold Andrus (.286/.400/.374) got the start and had three singles in five trips. It was Andrus' first start since December 12.

La Guaira designated hitter Max Ramirez (.299/.396/.385) was 1-for-3 with two walks, two RBI, and three runs scored. Though the 26-year-old is hitting relatively well, he has only one extra-base hit (a double) in his last 13 games.

Third baseman Renny Osuna also went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs batted in.

Southpaw reliever Joe Ortiz (3.72 ERA/.319 BAA) earned his first victory despite yielding three unearned runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Ortiz fanned one.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

The Bravos took home the 2010 Liga Paralela title over Caracas in the best-of-three championship series.

Dominican Winter League

There were no games on Thursday, as the league prepares for its four-team round robin playoff. The Gigantes, Toros, Leones, and Estrellas qualified for the playoffs. This means that Licey's Engel Beltre is finished until the 2011 regular season.

Though Julio Borbon's Aguilas Cibaenas club didn't reach the playoffs, he was drafted by the Leones del Escogido and will play for them during the round robin.

The postseason is scheduled to begin on Saturday, December 26.

Puerto Rican Winter League

No Rangers appeared on Thursday.

Mexican Pacific League

Guasave catcher Jose Felix saw action as a late-inning defensive replacement, but he didn't have a plate appearance.

Second baseman Brian Barden saw his average drop to .129 (4-for-31) after he went hitless in four trips on Thursday. The 29-year-old is batting just .129 in his first eight contests with Mazatlan.
