Winterball Roundup - 11/28

Phillips is playing in Puerto Rico

Left-handers Ben Snyder and Zach Phillips pitched for Ponce of the Puerto Rican Winter League on Sunday evening. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action.

Venezuelan Winter League

La Guaira cleanup hitter Max Ramirez (.297/.368/.416) singled once and struck out twice in four at-bats. Through 29 games, Ramirez is 30-for-101 with six doubles, two homers, 10 free passes, and 23 punchouts.

Andres Blanco (.267/.353/.333) got the start at third base for Magallanes on Sunday and was 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.

After an excellent showing in Liga Paralela (11.2 innings, zero earned runs), left-hander and former Rangers prospect Edwin Escobar got his first start with the big club on Sunday. Pitching against Blanco's Magallanes team, the 18-year-old Escobar earned the victory while yielding just one run on two hits over five innings of work.

Escobar, who had a 4.86 ERA in 14 starts at short-season Salem-Keizer this season, was traded to the Giants in exchange for lefty reliever Ben Snyder during Spring Training this past March.

While with the Rangers in '09, he flashed an upper-80s fastball to go along with a promising big-breaking curve. The Venezuela native may not possess front-line projection, but he does have the potential for a solid three-pitch repertoire.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

As always, Liga Paralela took the day off on Sunday.

Dominican Winter League

The Aguilas Cibaenas blew away Licey, 12-1, on Sunday evening. The club out-hit its opponent by a 17-4 margin. Aguilas leadoff man Julio Borbon pitched in with a pair of singles in five at-bats, keeping his average at an even .400. He was also hit by a pitch.

Though Licey didn't have a strong night offensively, center fielder Engel Beltre (.377/.393/.434) contributed by going 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.

First baseman Chris Davis has been an important part of the Estrellas de Oriente lineup for the last two weeks, but the club scored six runs on 13 hits without his help on Sunday. Davis went 0-for-5, dropping his average to .310.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Despite pitching relatively well, Ponce starting pitcher Ben Snyder was stuck with the loss after his opposing pitcher––5-foot-8 lefty Willie Collazo––tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout.

Snyder allowed two runs while scattering five hits through 4.1 innings. He struck out two while walking zero and plunking one.

Left-hander Zach Phillips made his winterball debut later in the contest, though he was knocked around a bit. The 24-year-old worked two-thirds of an inning but gave up two runs after he walked two batters, allowed a hit, and uncorked a wild pitch.

Phillips was getting his first game action since September. A member of the Rangers' 40-man roster, the lefty relief prospect posted a 2.69 ERA in 67 innings between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2010.

Mexican Pacific League

No Rangers appeared on Sunday, but catcher Jose Felix has begun playing in Mexico. The 22-year-old went 0-for-2 for Guasave on Saturday evening. Felix is playing winterball after batting .347 in 13 games during the Arizona Fall League.
