Arizona Fall League: Surprise 6 – Mesa 5
13-11-2, 3.0 GB
Left-handed reliever Corey Young was the only Rangers prospect to appear for the Rafters on Thursday. Young worked two shutout innings, giving up two hits, walking one, and striking out two.
According to pitch f/x, Young had his usual stuff, which included an 88-90 mph sinking fastball to go along with a sharp upper-70s curveball. Young also mixed in four changeups (out of 28 pitches) and got a double play groundout and a swinging strike.
Both of Young’s strikeouts occurred on 78 mph curveballs––one got Andrew Romine swinging and one caught Josh Vitters looking.
The New Jersey native has logged 7.2 scoreless innings with Surprise this fall. Though a short sample size, Young appears to be working down in the zone with his sinker, as he is getting 3.75 groundouts per flyout thus far.
Venezuelan Winter League
Caracas starting pitcher Guillermo Moscoso (3.00 ERA/.227 BAA) improved to 1-0 behind a strong start on Thursday evening. The 27-year-old righty worked five innings, allowing one run on four hits. He fanned four while walking just one.
After starting his season with two relief appearances, Moscoso has moved into the Leones rotation, where he has made two starts and yielded one run over nine innings.
Infielder Guilder Rodriguez, who was re-signed by the Rangers to a minor league deal earlier this week, entered the game as a pinch runner in the eighth inning but didn’t get a plate appearance.
The 27-year-old has appeared in 14 games this winterball season, largely as a pinch runner and defensive replacement. He has two hits in six at-bats to go along with one stolen base.
Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)
David Paisano had a rough afternoon at the plate, batting second and playing centerfield for the La Guaira club. The prospect went hitless in all five of his plate appearances, failing to reach base and stranding six runners on base. He also committed an error while fielding a single.
Left-hander Winston Marquez was acquired by Texas in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft last December, but he was released after a poor Spring Training. The 23-year-old ended up logging seven innings with the independent club in Tijuana. He worked six innings in Liga Paralela on Thursday, giving up one run on three hits and improving to 4-0 on the winter.
Another former Rangers farmhand, southpaw Edwin Escobar, hurled a scoreless inning with two strikeouts after Marquez left the game for Lara.
Dominican Winter League
Licey’s Engel Beltre saw action as a ninth-inning defensive replacement in left field. He didn’t get a plate appearance, and there wasn’t a ball hit to him.
Puerto Rican Winter League
No Rangers appeared in Friday’s action.
Mexican Pacific League
The circuit has begun its 2010 campaign, but there will be no Rangers players participating this season.
