Winterball Roundup - 10/22

The Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico kicked off their respective winter leagues on Friday evening. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action.

Arizona Fall League: Surprise 7 – (@) Phoenix 6
6-4

Davis Stoneburner's hot start at the plate has earned him some quick respect in the Fall League. The Virginia native batted fifth and played DH on Friday, though he was hitless in five plate appearances. Stoneburner struck out twice.

Catcher Jose Felix, who hit eighth in the order, had one single in five trips, lowering his early-season average to .333. He also grounded into a double play.

Left-hander Corey Young didn't permit a run in one-third of an inning, though he did allow an inherited runner to score. The reliever gave up two hits––a single to left field and a single to first base. He didn't have a walk or a strikeout.

Venezuelan Winter League

Designated hitter and cleanup hitter Max Ramirez singled once in three trips, raising his average to .300 on the young season. He was also hit by a pitch. La Guaira centerfielder David Paisano appeared as a late defensive replacement and didn't get a plate appearance.

Dominican Winter League

Right-hander Warner Madrigal hurled a perfect inning of relief for the Toros del Este on the Dominican Winter League's opening night. Madrigal, who earned the victory, has struggled in past years of winterball.

Centerfielder Willy Taveras finished the 2010 campaign with the Rangers organization, but he is now set to become a free agent once again. The speedster batted second for Aguilas Cibaenas and singled once in four trips. He also gunned down a runner at home plate.

Other Rangers players currently listed on rosters are Pedro Strop (Cibao), Omar Beltre (Toros), Doug Mathis (Toros), Alexi Ogando (Toros), Esteban German (Toros), Guillermo Pimentel (Toros), and Andres James (Licey).

Puerto Rican Winter League

No Rangers appeared on opening day in Puerto Rico.

Mexican Pacific League

The circuit has begun its 2010 campaign, but there will be no Rangers players participating this season.
